Tokyo Banquet Features Ballsy Main Course

On April 8th 2012, a surprising tweet drew the attention of thousands and continued to spark interest. Mao Sugiyama, a 22 year old man from Tokyo had announced the following: “Please retweet. I am offering my male genitals (full penis, testes, scrotum) as a meal for 100,000 yen…. I will prepare and cook as the buyer requests, at his chosen location” and provided photographic evidence of the surgical procedure that he went underwent to have his genitals removed.

Sugiyama publicly declared himself as asexual and as such, made the decision to remain devoid of male genitalia. He also suggests on his personal blog (http://h-c.main.jp) that  casting off  sexual organs can serve as a step towards a more eudemonic state of life and well-being.

The actual banquet took place on April 13th and out of the six promised consumers, five turned up to partake in the rare delight. The event was also attended by a number of curious onlookers, who were forced to settle for somewhat less interesting, but considerably safer dishes of beef and crocodile.

Sugiyama, contributed to his own natural flavourings by braising the meat and garnishing it with button mushrooms and parsley. However, according to Calorielab.com’s documentation of the event, Sugiyama’s efforts did little to improve the actual flavour with one eater commenting that: “The only taste was of the red wine that it had been pre-stewed in. The scrotum was surprisingly even harder and more rubbery than the penis, but tasteless…The testicles were hard on the outside, soft and glutinous in the middle, with a fishy or gamey taste”.

Delicious? Perhaps more of a matter of personal taste.
